Horse galloping down busy Houston freeway caught on video

HOUSTON – It’s a sight you don’t see often — even if you live in Texas.

Christopher McKelvey was driving eastbound on 610 near Cullen Boulevard around 10 p.m. Saturday when he looked out his car window and saw a rider-less horse galloping down the busy freeway.

“My first thought was I need to try and get him off the highway,” McKelvey said. “It’s just crazy. You’re exiting from 288, and you just see a horse.”

He posted the video to Facebook and it went viral — attracting viewers from as far as Australia and more than 1,500 reactions.

He said it was a young, healthy horse with shod hooves.

“Look who's over here in the fast lane! There's some horsepower over here in the fast lane, ” McKelvey said in the video.

McKelvey said the animal was in panic mood, attempting to dodge honking vehicles coming from all directions.

He and a group of other concerned drivers managed to corral the horse in the slow lane and then herded it onto the 610 East feeder road.

“I used hand gestures to signal the other drivers,” McKelvey said. “We formed a wave, and once we got the horse running with the flow of traffic he started to calm down.”

McKelvey said he doesn't know where the horse is now, but a second driver volunteered to call the Houston Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

We reached out to the Houston SPCA about the horse and have yet to hear back.
