An inmate at the Bexar County Jail died while in custody late Wednesday night.
A press release issued by Bexar County Sheriff's Department spokesman Paul Berry stated 55-year-old Daniel Puente was found unconscious and unresponsive around 9 p.m.
According to the release, Puente was in custody on a charge of possession of a controlled substance and was in the process of being released from the jail because bond had been posted.
Puente was escorted from his cell and taken to booking where he was beginning the release process.
He was taken to a room to change clothes and the detention officer returned a few minutes later and found him unconscious and unresponsive.
The release stated the detention officer called for immediate medical attention and paramedics arrived, but were unable to revive Puente and pronounced him dead.
Bexar County Sheriff's detectives are investigating, but preliminary indications showed no signs of foul play or trauma. Sheriff's will also review surveillance video to get an indication of what may have happened.
The release stated Puente had been in and out of the jail multiple times over the years and was taken into custody for this most recent charge three days ago.
While at the jail, Puente was in the administrative segregation unit which meant he had no contact with other inmates, the release stated.
The Bexar County Medical Examiner's Office will determine a cause of death.
