Kendall County Sheriff's Office releases video of person of interest in rash of car burglaries

Vehicles appear to have mostly been unlocked

KENDALL COUNTY, Texas – The Kendall County Sheriff's Office is on the lookout for a person of interest in a rash of overnight car burglaries.

A resident's surveillance camera on Oak Acres Lane shows, in the early hours of Tuesday, a man walk up to a shed, look at the camera and walk away. Public information officer Sgt. Neil Quick said the Sheriff's Office is aware of four incidents from that night in which someone possibly rifled through vehicles -- two on Oak Acres Lane and two on Creekside Terrace.

A theft in which a gun was stolen from an unlocked vehicle was the only theft to result in a report being taken, Quick said.

The Sheriff's Office has posted the surveillance video on its Facebook page in the hope of identifying the man in the video.

"The question we have is, 'What are you doing at 1 o'clock in the morning, walking around somebody's property?'" Quick said. "So, therefore, common sense would tell you he possibly has something to do with the car burglaries, where if not, maybe he knows something or who did it."

Quick said the Sheriff's Office first received a call Tuesday morning from an Oak Acres Lane resident who said someone had gone through his vehicle, and some change was missing from his ashtray. Later that day, another man on Oak Acres Lane called in to say a Yeti product was missing from the bed of his pickup truck.

The office received a call the same day from a Creekside Terrace resident who was missing a handgun from his vehicle, Quick said. While a deputy was in the area talking to neighbors, another man noticed someone had gone through his vehicle, but nothing was missing.

Except for the call about the Yeti product, the incidents all involved unlocked vehicles, Quick said.

The burglaries may be even more widespread Ron Woodruff lives on Creekside Terrace and said he has talked to several neighbors whose cars were rifled through. Most of the cars, he said, had been unlocked.

Another resident on the street said his truck was locked, but his back window is unable to close.

Most of the missing items were small.

"Change, sunglasses, scratch-off cards, gas cards," Woodruff said.

Still, for his neighbor Colleen Gallagher, who said she found an open glove box and console in her unlocked car, which was parked in her driveway, it was unnerving.

"You just feel violated and hope that it doesn't happen again," she said.

Quick said residents should remove their possessions from their cars or hide them if that isn't possible. Residents also need to take their keys from their vehicles and lock the car doors each night.

"Boerne is a great community. Kendall County is a great community to live in. You're always going to have thieves and criminals," Quick said. "That doesn't mean they live here, but traveling through."

The Kendall County Sheriff's Office is asking for anyone who knows the man in the video to call them at 830-249-9721, or to call Kendall County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-348-5323.

On the morning of May 16, 2017, several vehicles were burgarlized in the Ranger Creek Road area. We are asking the viewers if they can recognize this subject in the video. This person is not a suspect at this time, but was seen in the area of the burglaries. If you recognize this subject please call Sgt. Chad Sells at 830-249-9721 or if you wish to be anonymous, you can call the Kendall County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-348-LEAD (5323).
