A Christmas Eve celebration in Kirby turned deadly when a 26-year-old man accidently shot himself in the head with a loaded pistol he was showing to relatives.
"It happened so quickly that you don't even have a chance to respond except to just - you lose it," said Jim Hennigar, who was sitting on a couch alongside his stepson, John Sullivan, when the gun went off.
Sullivan was struck in the head by a single shot from his .45 caliber pistol as he showed the weapon to Hennigar while the two shared drinks with other family members.
"I'm devastated," said Donna Wizbicki, Sullivan's mother. "I miss my son. I want him back, but there's nothing I can do to bring him back."
Sullivan's girlfriend, Kristie Franklin, said he was a good provider and father to the couple's two young sons.
"Right now, we're mourning his death and hurting," Franklin said. "But in the future, we'll celebrate his memories and celebrate his life."
The family said they take comfort in knowing that Sullivan was an organ donor.
"Someone's prayers have been answered even though ours were not," Hennigar said.
In addition to struggling to cope with Sullivan's death, Hennigar said they are also struggling with a way to pay funeral expenses.
