AUSTIN, Texas -

Austin police shut down a major street in and out of the downtown area Friday after the discovery of a large sinkhole.

According to myfoxaustin.com, all lanes of Cesar Chavez to Interstate 35 were closed while crews worked to patch up the 15-by-15 foot sinkhole, which is believed to be up to 12-feet deep.

David Boyd of the Austin Police Department said it wasn't immediately known what caused the sinkhole.

The formation of the sinkhole comes one day before this weekend's Republic of Texas biker rally, which is expected to attract 200,000 people to downtown Austin.
