SAN ANTONIO -

A 41-year-old man was found guilty Thursday in the beating death of a man outside a convenience store.

Jurors in the 290th District Court deliberated for about two hours before returning their verdict against Larry Castro.

The defendant was among three men charged in the slaying of 41-year-old Juan "Johnny" Romero outside the Diamond Food Mart on Vance Jackson Road in October 2012.

During the trial, one of the defendants, Bernardo Crisanto, testified that Castro was the instigator of the fight that eventually led to the victim's death.

Crisanto, who pleaded guilty in the case, will receive no more than 20 years in prison as part of his plea deal.

Family members told KSAT 12 News that the fatal beating stemmed from an alleged debt Castro owed Romero over a lost game of pool.

The punishment phase of Castro's trial began Thursday afternoon. He could face up to life in prison.
