Prom season is one of the busiest times for limousine operators in San Antonio.
Elegant Limousine began carrying high school students to some 40 proms around San Antonio and South Texas in April and they will run the prom service through May.
With the recent deadly accident in California where a limousine caught on fire, killing four passengers trapped inside, some parents of local teens had a few questions.
“A lot of people were asking about our safety,” said Kent Mantle, of Elegant Limousines, “ (and) what kind of safety procedures we have in place.”
Mantle said the city has a ground transportation unit that oversees limo services and they follow all their rules and regulations, even going a step further.
For instance, the city requires a fire extinguisher in the truck or back of a limo.
Mantle said his company goes a step further and has another fire extinguisher up front where the driver can get in just seconds. “It’s just common sense,” Mantle said.
Their limos are also equipped with a communication system that allows passengers to talk with the driver on a hands-free device, and vice versa.
Mantle also has safety talk with his drivers. "'Be aware of your surroundings, let the people know where are the quickest exits out of the limo are and be a little more proactive,'" he said he tells them.
Mantle said he wants to make sure the evening is a good experience the students will never forget.
“One or your fondest memories, hopefully, in high school is the prom and the cool limo that showed up," Mantle said.
