Thursday marks the 50th anniversary of President John F. Kennedy's trip to San Antonio to visit the former Brooks Air Force Base, the day before he was assassinated.

The president made the trip to dedicate several new buildings at the base's school of aerospace medicine.

To honor the occasion, local leaders gathered for a ceremony in Kennedy's honor.

Attending the ceremony was Billy Welch, the man who was leading an experiment that the president took great interest in during his visit.

"He had the ability to come across as a real person," Welch said. "He was the president. Yes, he had that aura around him, not secret service but the aura of leadership. But he also came across as a real person."
