Man arrested after stealing vehicle, police chase on NW Side

Chase ended on Culebra Road near Hamilton

SAN ANTONIO – A man has been arrested after leading officers on a chase in a stolen vehicle on the city's Northwest Side, authorities said Wednesday.

Police said they received a call from the 100 block of Northwest 34th Street about a suspicious person passed out inside a vehicle.

When officers arrived they found the man passed out behind the wheel and with a gun in his lap. When officers woke the suspect he jumped out of the vehicle and ran away, police said.

Officers chased the man through a nearby neighborhood, police said. Police said when he passed through someone's backyard the homeowner there fired shots at him.

The suspect then stole a pickup truck and led police on a car chase which ended on Culebra Road near Hamilton, police said.

The suspect hit at least one car at that location and, during the chase, tried to ram a police car.

The suspect now is in custody facing charges including two counts of auto theft, possession of stolen firearm and possible others.

San Antonio Police Chief William McManus noted that the officer who tackled the suspect is a 30-year-veteran who just got his 30-year-pin this morning.
