SAN ANTONIO -

Police have arrested the driver involved in an alleged fatal hit-and-run Saturday evening in west San Antonio. Jose Hernandez, 57, has been charged with intoxication manslaughter in connection with the death of 25-year-old Gilbert Ramos.

The accident happened around 8:30 p.m. Saturday at the intersection of General McMullen Drive and Wallace Street.

According to police,  Hernandez fled the scene of another crash on General McMullen at a high rate of speed when he struck and killed Ramos, who was on the crosswalk.

Witnesses who were following Hernandez were able to detain him until police arrived.

According to records. Hernandez has been convicted of DWI four times since the mid-80s.

Hernandez's first DWI conviction was in 1984. His second came seven years later in 1991.

In January 2002, Hernandez was convicted for a third time and then a fourth time in 2009.

The last two convictions were both felonies and Hernandez was put on probation. Hernandez got off probation in February.
