The Bexar County Medical Examiner's Office has released the name of a man who was fatally shot outside his south San Antonio apartment early Monday morning.
The victim was identified Tuesday morning as 38-year-old Jose Sorto.
San Antonio police said Sorto was gunned down around 2:45 a.m. Monday at the Montrose Place Apartments in the 400 block of Montrose.
Valdemar Valdez, 36, (pictured below) was detained by police a short time after the shooting was reported. Valdez was later charged with murder and was being held Monday at the Bexar County Jail on a $100,000 bond.
SAPD investigators believe Sorto answered a knock at the front door from Valdez, who was reportedly looking for his girlfriend.
Witnesses told police Valdez had come to the apartment previously looking for his girlfriend, and Sorto told them he would handle the situation.
The two men got into an argument on a second-floor balcony, then Valdez allegedly pulled out a gun and fired two to three shots, hitting Sorto in the head, police said.
Valdez fled, but was found by police officers near Interstate 37 at Fair Avenue.
SAPD investigators also believe they found the weapon used in the shooting, which was dumped in the same area at Caldwell and Presa.
