SAN ANTONIO -

A man was found beaten early Wednesday morning near some train tracks south of downtown San Antonio.

Officers say the man was found around 2:30 a.m. lying on the side of the tracks between Steves Avenue and East Mitchell Street.

A Union Pacific train came along and the conductor reported the incident. Police initially thought the man may have been struck by the train, but that had not been confirmed as of 8 a.m. Wednesday.

Police said the man suffered some type of head injury that may have been the result of an earlier assault.

The man was taken to University Hospital for treatment. Union Pacific officials are reviewing the train's surveillance tapes to determine if the train struck the man.
