SAN ANTONIO -

A San Antonio man with a history of violence been sentenced to 25 years in prison after he was convicted of beating his wife and son.

Joseph Almanza, 34, was found guilty last month of injury to a child and continuous family violence.

A state district judge found that Almanza is a habitual criminal, which raised his sentencing range from two to ten years in prison up to 25 years to life.

Almanza was accused of punching the boy and assaulting his mother inside their home in the 1500 block of Jackson Keller Road in September 2012.

The boy told them Almanza came to his home and began fighting with his mother about a set of car keys, an affidavit stated.

San Antonio police said records show Almanza also was arrested in June for another assault involving the boy’s mother.

The judge said Almanza is also a suspected member of the Texas Mexican Mafia.
