Man questioned by police jumps to death from Loop 1604 overpass

18-wheeler struck man who jumped from Green Mountain Road overpass

SAN ANTONIO – A man who just had a conversation with two San Antonio police officers jumped to his death without warning from the overpass at Green Mountain Road and Loop 1604, police said.

A passerby called officers around 7 a.m. Monday for a "suspicious person." The officers made contact with that person, a man in his 30s, and questioned him, according to Sgt. Javier Salazar, spokesman for SAPD.

"They said he didn't seem suspicious. He didn't seem despondent," Salazar said. "He told them he just hurt his leg."

Without warning, during a lull in the conversation, the man suddenly jumped off the overpass as the officers looked on, Salazar said.

An 18-wheeler that was westbound on Loop 1604 struck him as he fell toward the highway below, police said. Salazar said the truck driver was not hurt.

As of 8 a.m., police were still working to identify the dead man. Westbound traffic had to be diverted onto the access road after the incident.
