Joe Delgado carried an American flag as he ran on Highway 151 as a tribute to the victims and heroes of Sept. 11, 2001.
"Well, the whole point to my run was for what today stood for. And not just for that, just for the fact that when this happened 12 years ago America came together as one," Delgado said.
Delgado, a proud Marine, served two years in Iraq. When he got tired while running, he remembered his fallen brothers. He also found motivation from total strangers.
“People were honking at me and that's what really kept me going. when I was feeling (like) ok I need to stop a little bit someone would honk at me (I would ) raise the American flag and just (keep) on going straight." Said Delgado.
Delgado was questioned by police while running. SAPD said they received several phone calls about a suspicious male in the area. After speaking to Delgado, he was allowed to go. He was asked to find a safer place to run though.
This was the third year Delgado payed tribute to the 9/11 victims. His future runs include one on veterans days and the Marine Corps birthday.
