A suspected carjacker shot a man in the leg, pistol-whipped him and forced him to drive from east San Antonio to downtown early Monday morning, San Antonio police said.
Investigators said the incident started around 2:30 a.m. as 49-year-old Thomas McBath drove near I-37 and South New Braunfels.
Bike patrol officers were patrolling in the 400 block of East Commerce when they saw McBath quickly pass them, then suddenly stop at a green light.
McBath told the officers he was looking for a hotel room when a man got into his car and forced him to drive.
By the time he made it to South Presa and East Commerce, he had been shot in the right thigh and pistol-whipped. McBath told police the shooter stole $60 from him.
The suspected carjacker fled on foot. He was described as a man in his 20s, about 5 feet 10 inches tall with a slight build.
McBath was taken to San Antonio Military Medical Center. He is expected to survive.
