SAN ANTONIO -

A stolen handgun proved to be a big clue, leading to the arrest of a 31-year-old man in the burglary of his neighbor’s home, San Antonio police said.

An arrest warrant affidavit stated that detectives already had identified Hawkins as a suspect in a separate burglary and had him in custody when they tied him to this case.

The affidavit stated that police found a gun in Hawkins possession at the time of his arrest April 6 which had been stolen from his neighbor.

That neighbor had been the victim of a burglary last December, the affidavit stated.

Police said in addition to the physical evidence, Hawkins’ girlfriend told them that he had confided in her about committing the burglary at his neighbor’s home.

The affidavit stated the victim told police he that he suspected all along that his neighbor—Hawkins—is the one who broke into his home.
