SAN ANTONIO -

Friends and longtime customers said goodbye Sunday to the owner of one of San Antonio's oldest hamburger joints.

A memorial was held for Phyllis Danie at Joe's Hamburger Place in the 2400 block of Blanco Road.

Dozens of people showed up at Joe's to share stories, laughs and possibly eat their final burger at the iconic San Antonio eatery.

Danie took over Joe's in 1973 and shared the secret recipe only with a niece who now lives in Seattle. Danie passed away on Oct. 6 at the age of 80.

"She was hilarious and half the fun was being here and watching her interact with us. She had her idiosyncrasies like we all did and we played off of each other and we all had a god time," said longtime customer Clarence Simpson.

The family plans to keep the restaurant open for at least six months before deciding whether to keep it open for good.
