Methodist Hospital and Methodist Children's Hospital will undergo a $200 million expansion starting next year, according to Gay Nord, its chief executive officer.
Nord said it was the largest expansion in the hospital's 50-year history.
"Methodist Hospital must grow to meet the increasing demand for its services," Nord said.
She said as it is, "We have the busiest children's emergency department in the nation."
Nord said in 2017, there will be 40 emergency beds. In addition to its newborn intensive care unit, one of the largest in the region, will have 94 beds.
She said the adult ER will be expanded to 48 treatment rooms.
The announcement comes within days of Friday's expiration of a memorandum of understanding between Methodist and UT Health Science Center.
The two announced last September their intention to expand pediatric care and medical education in the Medical Center area.
However, Nord said Tuesday's milestone that was two years in the making, is unrelated.
She said, "There is no correlation."
