Military members stand armed at SA recruitment centers

SAN ANTONIO – Members of the National Guard stepped up to the plate Wednesday and stood outside the military recruitment stations on Ingram Road.

This comes after Gov. Greg Abbott's order to protect military facilities. Texas is not the only state responding to the deadly shooting that took place in Chattanooga, Tennessee last week.

Abbott said arming members of the National Guard will serve as a deterrent to anyone wishing to do harm to our servicemen and women.

"For us, we've always prided ourselves on defending our homeland ... In the past you've seen Texas National Guardsmen respond when the governor calls us to go serve or aid somewhere else," said Master Sgt. Scott Smith, of the Texas Army National Guard. "In this case, it was to serve ourselves and to provide protection for our soldiers and the soldiers around us."

Armed civilians in many cities across the state have also step in to help with protection at recruitment centers.
