SAN ANTONIO -

Sodelva Lopez’s son, William Lopez, 22, was shot and killed when a car driven by his friend was fired on outside a west side apartment complex.

"Nobody was ever charged with my son’s murder and I want answers,” Sodelva Lopez said.

According to Bexar County First Assistant District Attorney Cliff Herberg, William Lopez was a passenger in a car driven by his friend, Ronnie Castillo.

Herberg said Castillo had been involved in a fight outside a bar on the night of Aug. 18, 2011.

He left the bar and drove to a nearby apartment complex.

“The allegations are that Mr. Lopez’s friend went to that scene looking for a fight and found a fight,” Herberg said. “And somebody defended themselves.”

He said Castillo drove into a crowd at the apartments and injured one man.

Victor Padilla, who was in the crowd, fired in self-defense at Castillo’s car as it sped away, Herberg said.

One shot hit Lopez, killing him.

“Mr. Lopez’s friend was the aggressor,” Herberg said. “The shooter was just defending himself and the other people around him.”

Padilla was never indicted.

Lopez’s mother said she was never told that.

“Nobody called me,” she said. “The DA’s (office) didn’t call me. I found out through a friend.”

Herberg denies that.

“There was never a trial date set on this case (and there) never has been,” he said. “They were notified when the case was rejected.”

Castillo was charged with aggravated assault for driving his car into the crowd that night.

His trial is set to begin on Thursday.
