SAN ANTONIO -

It is a case that even seasoned federal prosecutors call “unbelievable.”

Jennifer Marie Vargas, 33, the wife of an Army soldier stationed at Fort Sam Houston, is accused of seriously injuring the couple’s son by pulling his scrotum, tearing the skin.

“This case is unbelievable, “ said Assistant U.S. Attorney Sarah Wannarka, following a detention hearing for Vargas in federal court. “I’ve never seen anything like this before that someone can act with such rage to hurt their own child."

The child’s father arrived at the couple’s home on post last month and found his son bleeding profusely from the groin area. He rushed him to San Antonio Military Medical Center for treatment.

“Dad is a hero,” Wannarka said. “Not only does he serve our country in the military but he also saved his little boy by getting him the medical care that he needed.”

The child has since been released from the hospital and is in his father’s care.

Vargas is charged with assault within maritime and territorial jurisdiction and if convicted is facing a maximum sentence of 10 years in federal prison.

On Monday, she waived her detention hearing and is being held without bond.
