Mother of 2012 murder victim: Police did ‘good job’ making arrest
Daniel Reyes, 21, charged with capital murder
The mother of murder victim Elizabeth Bermea, 45, is praising San Antonio police detectives for the work they did that led to the recent arrest of a suspect.
Daniel Reyes, 21, was booked into the Bexar County jail Saturday night on a charge of capital murder stemming from the January 2012 case.
“It’s a relief,” Sanjuana Bernal said Monday morning in reaction to the news. “There's nothing that can bring (Elizabeth) back, you know? But at the same time, I think that they did a great job."
Bernal said Bermea was her oldest daughter, and even after nearly two years, the grief she feels is still fresh.
"It's been sad. We go over to see her grave, " she said.
Police found Bermea’s body in an alley near Navidad and Micklejohn streets on Jan. 13 of last year.
An arrest warrant affidavit just made available gives details about the crime, stating that Bermea was sexually assaulted, beaten, kicked and dragged through the streets.
The affidavit stated that during questioning, Reyes admitted to hitting Bermea during a “physical confrontation.”
Reyes told detectives he “hit her hard enough to knock her out so that she would not remember what had happened to her the next day,” the affidavit stated.
When it happened, the crime had people in the area, including Rosalinda Sepulveda, worried about their own safety.
Now she’s on edge again, after learning the accused killer was living right next door to her.
Sepulveda said she noticed a lot of police officers at the home this weekend.
But it wasn’t until she watched the news that she understood what was happening.
"I was, like, 'Oh my God. That's the neighbor!'’ she said. “Wow. He's young to be going down for something like that."
According to Sepulveda, police officers have been to the home several times before for fights involving Reyes and relatives.
Records confirm he has been arrested before, including at least once for domestic violence.
Now, Reyes is in even bigger trouble. He faces a charge of capital murder.
