SAN ANTONIO -

A San Antonio mother is pleading with the community for any information regarding her son's murder.

Leonard Bankhead, 34, was found dead more than 7 years ago.

Irene Bankhead, Leonard Bankhead's mother, said it was a Sunday morning when she got the call that her son was dead.

"(Leonard's father) said, 'Bubbie's dead,'" said Bankhead. "At that time, it seemed like the life was just drained out of me and I just lost it."

On July 30, 2006, Leonard Bankhead was found stabbed to death in a field off of the 6600 block of Monterey, near Acme, on the city's West Side.

To this day, Irene Bankhead, who lovingly called her youngest son "Bubbie," said she can't understand why someone would do this to him.

"I've done everything I possibly could to keep my sanity," she said. "In knowing that someone would do that to him and then they just left him out in the yard, uncovered. So it was very, very hard."

Irene Bankhead said the night before Bubbie was murdered, he had gone out with his cousin. She said they got separated and then he was found stabbed to death.

She said it is still difficult after all these years knowing that someone in the neighborhood knows something about her son's murder and still hasn't come forward.

"I'm not saying this just because he's my son, but he was a very sweet person," she said. "And when they took his life, it affected more than the family. It affected a lot of people."

Irene said she's just hoping someone in the neighborhood will change their mind about coming forward.

If you know anything about this murder, you are asked to call Crime Stoppers at 224-STOP.
