SAN ANTONIO -

A UTSA police officer died Tuesday after slamming into a car in West Bexar County.

The crash happened on Shaenfield Road and FM 1516.

UTSA identified 33-year-old Sgt. Hector Barrera as the victim in the deadly crash.

The Bexar County Sheriff's Department said Barrera was going northbound. A driver heading south apparently did not see him as it was turning into a gas station.

They said Barrera hit the side of the car and fell off the bike. He was then run over by the car.

Deputies said he died at the scene.

UTSA said Barrera joined the Police Department in 2000 as a parking controller. He enrolled in the UT System Police Academy in 2003 and was commissioned as a police officer later that year.

Barrera served the Zapata County Sheriff's office and the Starr County Sheriff's Office, before returning to UTSA in 2006. Last September, he was promoted to sergeant.

The crash is still under investigation and there is no word yet if the driver, a man in his 60s, will face any charges.
