Mourners gather to pay respects to deputy killed in sinkhole accident

Funeral services begin Friday at 7 p.m.

SAN ANTONIO – Mourners gathered at the El Sendero Assembly of God Church to pay their respects to Dora Linda Nishihara, the 68-year-old Bexar County Sheriff’s Office deputy who died after her car fell into a sinkhole on Quintana Road Sunday night.

The family had a private viewing Friday afternoon, and will give the public a chance to pay their respects on Friday evening.

Family members expect law enforcement officers, friends, churchgoers and even people who didn’t know her but heard about her story to attend the public viewing.

Nishihara was one of two drivers to get trapped in the sinkhole Sunday. The other person was a 60-year-old man who was rescued by good Samaritans. First responders were unable to get to Nishihara’s car, which they found underwater and upside down in the sinkhole the next day.

The cause of the sinkhole remains under investigation. It was created where a section of new pipe and old pipe meet underneath Quintana Road off New Laredo Highway.

Funeral services will begin at 7 p.m. Nishihara will be buried on Saturday.
