Concerns grow over gun disguised as cellphone

'Ideal Conceal' is .380 caliber double-barreled handgun

DETROIT – A new handgun that folds up to look just like a smartphone has sparked debate on social media and has law enforcement keeping a close eye.

The “Ideal Conceal” is a .380 caliber double-barreled handgun invented by Kirk Kjellberg. He said he came up with the idea after a little boy pointed out his firearm at a restaurant.

“A boy spotted me in the restaurant and said loudly, ‘Mommy, Mommy, that guy’s got a gun,’ and then pretty much the whole restaurant stared,” Kjellberg said.

He decided to make a gun that wouldn’t stand out as much, designing something that could be folded to about the same size as a smartphone.

“It’s more so for people that want to be able to carry a gun when they need to and not have to engage other people about why they’re carrying that gun,” Kjellberg said.

The new handgun hasn’t hit the market yet, but already it’s triggered a huge debate on social media. Sales are expected to begin in October.
