The Florida Keys SPCA received a tip Saturday claiming a woman told staffers at Fisherman's Hospital that she had killed her dog.

When Monroe County Sheriff's Office deputies investigated, Evans said her Chihuahua, "Big John Evans," had bitten her on the hand Friday. It was the third time the dog had bitten her this year.

Evans told deputies she went to bed and choked the dog with his collar at 5 a.m. the next morning and then buried the body in her yard.

Evans did not answer when asked why she did not seek help from an animal shelter.

The dog's body was dug up and taken to a veterinary hospital for a necropsy. The cause of death was determined to be strangulation.

Evans' bond was set at $25,000.
