Woman burned by spilled coffee wins $100K from Starbucks

Mother of 3 sustained first-, second-degree burns

DUVAL COUNTY, Fla. – A jury awarded a Jacksonville mother of three $100,000 in damages for burns she suffered when a cup of hot coffee spilled on her in the drive-thru of a Starbucks shop in Jacksonville.

The 20-ounce Venti beverage caused first- and second-degree burns to Joanne Mogavero's mid-section in the July 2014 incident.

Mogavero was awarded money to cover pain and suffering, physical impairment, disfigurement, inconvenience, and loss of capacity for enjoyment of life, her attorney Steve Earle said.

The woman also had $15,000 worth of medical bills as a result of the spill.

“My client didn’t want sympathy from the jury — she wanted justice — and the jury gave it to her with its verdict, Earle said. “It was good to see a just result."
