Neighbors cleaning up after tree toppled by high winds

SAN ANTONIO – Owners of two homes on the South Side cleaned up after high winds toppled a tree that landed in their front yards Sunday.

“We don’t have any water. It broke our water line, our sewer line,” said Leonard Pena, a homeowner.

Pena was at church when his wife tried getting a hold of him to tell him a tree had fallen on their home.

“Thank God that my wife and my daughter are OK. That’s the main thing. Everybody’s OK. Nobody’s hurt,” Pena said.

Branches from the pecan tree punctured Pena’s roof and damaged nearby power lines. His neighbor’s home was also hit.

“I heard, like, a huge gust of wind. The whole house shook, and I didn't really think nothing of it at first,” said Roland Pintor, a relative of Pena’s neighbor.

When Pintor realized what had happened, he was surprised.

“I just, like, couldn't believe it. It was just, like, just surreal. I have never like witnessed anything like it before,” Pintor said.

Pintor’s in-law’s house sustained roof, fence and other damage.

“Our house didn't get punctured through. It just has cracks along the top of the roof. The whole house just kind of shifted and that's it,” he said.

Both families are now left cleaning up the mess. The Penas will be filing an insurance claim in the hopes of getting assistance to pay for the repairs.

“We're safe. This can be replaced. Lives can't be replaced, so I thank God he protected me, my family, my neighbors. The rest is just material that we can replace,” Pena said.
