Neighbors heard mother's screams after she discovered her son's body

Laura Flores-Messick charged in slaying of live-in boyfriend Chason Montez-Deoca

SAN ANTONIO – The violent death of a 40-year-old man has left people in his far West Side neighborhood shaken and shocked.

Chason Montez-Deoca was found dead by his mother Saturday evening inside his home in the 7600 block of Muleshoe Lane. The victim's mother told police she had gone to the home after a series of disturbing phone calls with her son the previous evening.

According to an arrest warrant affidavit, the victim told his mother that he was arguing with his girlfriend, Laura Flores Messick, 30. His mother said he hung up when his girlfriend came to the door.

The next day, Montez-Deoca’s mother made the heartbreaking discovery.

"We had just sat down, and I heard a loud scream. It was the mom,” a neighbor, who didn’t want to be identified, said. “Everybody was running out to the yard to hear where it was coming from."

The neighbor said when she looked down the block, she saw the victim’s mother standing in his doorway sobbing.

Police arrived and began questioning everyone who lives nearby.

"No one heard shots. No one heard nothing. We didn't hear anything,” she said.

Although she has known Montez-Deoca, the neighbor said she didn’t know he was having problems at home.

But police said they got an earful from Flores-Messick, who they said confessed to killing her boyfriend. Police arrested her Sunday on a murder charge.

The affidavit said that the suspect shot Montez-Deoca in the chest and hand, and cut him on the neck with a knife.

When police questioned her, they said she told them that, during the killing, she was thinking “what a jerk” and “what an (expletive)” he was.

Investigators said she told them she left without getting help for Montez-Deoca because she feared she would be charged with murder, the affidavit said.

The court document also said that a relative told police that Flores-Messick had been violent toward the victim in the past, including an incident that left him with a bloody nose.
