It’s an idea that Incarnate Word President Dr. Lou Agnese says will become reality -- five stories, a prominent location and high visibility.
"For the university, it's one more piece of the puzzle of building the brand, the UIW, the cardinal brand in Texas," said Agnese.
A football field is part of "the sell" Dr. Lou Agnese envisions for transforming a piece of land behind Fox Tech High School. The plan will turn 100 yards into a 120,000 square foot medical school building, spurring a downtown medical center.
"Do I think it's all going to come together? Yeah, but it's a worry," Agnes said. "That's why I wake up at 2:30 in the morning and I think about what I've done and haven’t done yet."
Along with bringing in donations to build it, Agnese and Incarnate Word need city and county help with infrastructure. They will also, in Agnese's words, "adopt and partner with SAISD in exchange for the land."
"In the bio med area we compete now with Dallas, Houston, but now, even so with Austin, in developing a medical school," Agnese said. "It's even more competition for San Antonio, so having a second medical operation here, a second medical center, is very important to the city," said Agnese.
Under Agnese's watch, UIW has grown to be the fourth largest private school in Texas. He aims for it to be the largest by 2020.
In the last 13 years, Agnese has spearheaded Incarnate Word's growth in different medical professions. The medical school will be the latest.
"It's contributing to the core of San Antonio which is the students of San Antonio to the people of San Antonio. What better way to say you've done something in life than by supporting a project like this?" said Agnese.
Incarnate Word, the city and county have until the end of October to come up with an agreement. If they don't work out a deal at Fox Tech, Dr. Agnese says he will look at Brooks City Base.
Agnese said they will start construction somewhere in June 2015 and Incarnate Word will have its med school a year later.
Agnese is so confident in his plan that he has already hired a dean and two associate deans.
