The extension of a little stretch of road at Port San Antonio could lead to long line of opportunities.
On Tuesday morning, city leaders celebrated the opening of the extension of 36th Street on the city's southwest side.
The 1.7-mile stretch of road now runs from Highway 90 into the heart of Port San Antonio.
"This is the major industrial route through the property. It allows efficient access in and out of the property," said Bruce E. Miller, Port San Antonio president and CEO.
The road will relieve industrial traffic in surrounding neighborhoods,
It will also provide access to 400 acres of land that are now ready for development.
"The payoff is there's a whole bunch of land now that is accessible where companies can locate and more jobs can be created," said San Antonio Mayor Julian Castro.
There are currently 14 aerospace-based companies in Port SA.
City leaders say there's now room for more aerospace companies and believe new growth could bring up to 8,000 new jobs to the area.
They expect even more opportunities as construction of 36th Street continues.
It will eventually extend beyond Port San Antonio to the south, where it will connect to I-35.
"Kelly (Air Force Base) today is only about 40 percent built-out. We're looking at a growth of 35,000 jobs as this property redevelops in it's entirety over a long period of time," said Miller.
