New statistics show drunken driving fatalities increase in Texas

MADD continues to fight battle against drunk driving

Alarming statistics released by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration show that from 2011 to 2012, the state of Texas saw an increase of 80 alcohol-related driving fatalities, rising from 1,216 to 1,296.

It was the first increase in six years.

Bexar County statistics also show that alcohol-related driving fatalities have tripled in 2013.

"Quite honestly, per capita, we are the most dangerous city in Texas," said Mothers Against Drunk Driving South Texas Director Jennifer Northway, in regards to drinking and driving injuries.

As many more Texans hit the road over the holiday season -- combined with more festivities that involve alcohol -- statistics will likely show an even bleaker picture.

"We know that drunken driving fatalities spike in that timeframe between Thanksgiving and New Year's Eve," said Northway.

For that reason, MADD has teamed up with AAA of Texas and Walgreens to hand out red ribbons. The idea is to tie the ribbon to a visible place on your car, so it serves as a reminder and a pledge to have a designated driver this holiday season. The ribbons can be found at all AAA Texas locations and Walgreens locations in San Antonio.

"If you plan to drink, make a plan not to drive," said Doug Shupe, of AAA Texas. "It's that simple."
