New USAA app takes security to new level

Face, voice recognition used for security in new app

SAN ANTONIO – Remember when you used to have to drive to the bank to make a deposit? Mobile banking has changed all that. Now, USAA has taken that convenience to the next level.

Inside USAA's research and innovation lab is where biometrics meets banking.

Fingerprint technology is the newest thing. Members can use Apple's touch ID to access their accounts through the mobile app. They can also log on in the blink of an eye.

USAA recently launched face and voice recognition for Apple and Android users. You hold the phone in selfie position and blink to prove you're not a picture. You can also speak a given phrase.

USAA's Rick Swenson said the new options are proving popular.

"My identity is secure, because my voice is my password," he said. "Like everything else that's popular, it's convenient. (It has) the ease at which you can get into the application without having to remember passwords."

But what about security?

"It's highly secure," Swenson said. "But it is important to understand security is always a layered approach."

He said a sophisticated background technology also makes sure the mobile device is yours.

KSAT consumer reporter Marilyn Moritz put Swenson's phone to the test. She attempted ot open his app, but it didn't recognize her.

Already a half million USAA members have enrolled in the biometrics. Half of those are over the age of 35.

"I even have four 90-year-olds enrolled," Swenson said.
