Plans for a new Walmart are sparking heated debates among neighbors in the Shavano-area neighborhood.
The Walmart Neighborhood Market is set to be built at Lockhill Selma and De Zavala Road.
Some are excited; others are exasperated. Some neighbors have even started a petition against it.
"I'm definitely for the Walmart," said homeowner Lois Parker. "It's going to be convenient for us. We don't have to drive all the way through I-10."
"I don't think it's really needed because we have one down the street," said homeowner Juan Paredes Jr, "To me, it's kind of like an overkill."
A petition is circulating among homeowners online with about 800 signatures against the construction of a new store.
Concerns include increased traffic and the fact that there's already an existing Walmart superstore about two miles down the road at I-10 and De Zavala.
The concept of Walmart's Neighborhood Market is new to San Antonio The first in the area will be located at Marbach Road and Ellison Drive and is set to open on March 7.
The stores are about 38,000 square feet, which about a fifth of the size of Superstores.
It will offer fresh produce, meat and dairy, bakery and deli items, household supplies, health and beauty aids and a pharmacy with $4 prescriptions.
In a statement, Walmart Director of Communications Anne Hatfield said:
"Our customers are excited about the convenience of the smaller Neighborhood Market format. Their needs and expectations are changing. Our customers want to shop when they want and how they want, and we are ready to meet their expectations. Our small formats provide customers with the convenience and broad assortment of quality fresh foods and household essentials at our Every Day Low Price promise."
Construction in the Shavano Park neighborhood is set for the summer.
