SAN ANTONIO -

A portion of the western segment of the Wurzbach Parkway project could be opening up just in time for Christmas.

CPS hooked up the electricity for the street lights Tuesday afternoon for the segment that runs in between Blanco Road and West Avenue.

“We’re getting ready to open up the West Avenue intersection up to Vista Del Norte," said TxDOT spokesman Josh Donat.

The western segment was supposed to open up in December 2012, but TxDOT had issues with the previous contractor.

"Ballenger Construction ... had some financial issues and they actually left the project and I understand they filed for bankruptcy,” Donat said.

Completion of the project will now solely fall on the new contractor.

The project, which started three years ago, also has a middle segment that runs from West Avenue to Jones-Maltsberger, which is slated to be finished in 2015. The eastern segment runs from Jones-Maltsberger to Wetmore.

"We look forward to opening this section by end of summer 2014,”Donat said.
