SAN ANTONIO -

Growth at Northside Independent School District has been exploding in recent years, as the district has reached an enrollment milestone that few in the country have attained.

When Naomi Bernal and her brother Raul enrolled at Scarborough Elementary this summer, they put enrollment in the district over the 100,000 mark.

"There are only about 30 school districts in the entire country that have that many students enrolled, and so I think it's a pretty momentous occasion and one that deserves recognition," said NISD Superintendent Brian Woods.

The district awarded the Bernals with tickets to Six Flags. The district has been exploding in enrollment over the past few years, adding an average of 2,500 students per year.

"That's an issue for us, managing that growth so that we can have new schools to accommodate additional students, but then we also renovate new additions at older schools to accommodate the growth in those areas in the school district as well," Woods said.

The rapid growth hasn't diluted the quality of education in the district.

"I haven't had a teacher that has made me actually experience to read," said Naomi Bernal. "I've never liked to read but now that I'm here at this school, I love to read."

The enrollment hasn't stopped with the Bernals; Over 1,000 children have enrolled in NISD schools since the year began.
