Knife-wielding man in critical condition after police shoot him

Recent police academy graduate on administrative duty

SAN ANTONIO – A man wielding a knife was taken to University Hospital overnight in critical condition after being shot by police.

The officer-involved shooting happened in Alta Vista in the 400 block of West Magnolia near San Pedro Avenue.

Police received a call about 2:15 a.m. about a disturbance involving someone with a knife. When they arrived, two officers found a man in his 50s with a combat knife.

Police said the man refused to drop the knife. One of the officers pulled his stun gun and fired, police said.

Shortly after, the second officer shot the man multiple times in the upper torso.

The officer who shot the man graduated from the academy in December. He’ll be placed on administrative duty while the District Attorney’s Office reviews the case, as is standard procedure.
