A 26-year-old man has been arrested in connection with a home burglary in which a veteran’s military medals were stolen.
Jesse Vargas was taken into custody and his arrest is due, in part, to a police officer with a good memory, according to an arrest warrant affidavit.
The affidavit stated that the officer first met up with Vargas on Sept. 24 when he saw the suspect pushing a shopping cart along Commerce Street.
The cart was full of items, including military medals that had a name inscribed on them, the affidavit stated.
The officer remembered meeting the veteran whose name was etched on the medals, and questioned Vargas about he obtained them, the affidavit stated.
Police said Vargas told the officer he found them in a trash dumpster and intended to pawn them.
At the time, no burglary had been reported, so the officer had to let Vargas go, the affidavit stated.
However, at some point later, he found out the veteran’s home had been burglarized, and immediately identified Vargas as the suspect, the affidavit stated.
Police said during questioning, Vargas admitted to the burglary and to stealing the military medals and other items.
