1984: Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi is assassinated by her two security guards in retaliation for ordering Operation Blue Star, a military operation to remove Sikh separatists from the Golden Temple in Amritsar, India. In the wake of her death, riots broke out in New Delhi and nearly 10,000 Sikhs were killed. Gandhi is seen here with first lady Jacqueline Kennedy in 1962.
