The murder trial of Gilberto Villarreal began Tuesday afternoon with testimony from a victim he’s accused of shooting and wounding.

Yvette Espinoza told the jury how she and her husband Pete had asked Villarreal, known as “Little Mexico," to leave a birthday party on May 3, 2009.

The couple and a dozen friends were celebrating the birthday of Steven Moy at their home on Woodland Hills Drive.

Villarreal had dropped by after another partygoer told him about the party.

Espinoza said Villarreal eventually left but returned moments later and fired several shots into the home.

Three hit Moy.

“I rushed to his side and saw blood everywhere,” Espinoza sobbed. “I gave him CPR and was able to bring him back.”

Moy died later.

Espinoza and another party guest were also hit by the gunfire but did not suffer life threatening injuries.

If he is found guilty of Moy’s murder, Villarreal faces a maximum sentence of life in prison.

Testimony will continue on Wednesday in Judge Philip Kazen’s 290th District Court.
