SOMERSET -

A UPS delivery man is recovering after he was reportedly attacked by a pitbull while on the job in Somerset. It happened around 2:30 p.m. Tuesday.

“This kind of stuff doesn’t really happen out here,” said Somerset police Chief Trent Sproles.

Sproles said the 44-year-old driver was bit multiple times. “(The dog) broke the leash, a nylon leash and attacked the driver. The driver received puncture wounds to the left and right hands, wrist and arms,” said Sproles.

Sproles said when emergency workers arrived with a police officer to treat the driver, eyewitnesses said the dog came out of the bushes and attacked the police officer.

“He attacked him on his chest and pushed him off and received a slight injury to his left hand withdrew his weapon and fired one shot into the dog’s head killing the dog instantly.”

Police questioned the dog owner and it was unknown Tuesday evening if the owner would be ticketed or fined.

The deceased pit bull was taken to a private veterinarian for rabies testing.
