SAN ANTONIO -

Raymond Ortiz, 40, argued with another man in the days before that other man’s body was found in a field in a West side neighborhood, according to an arrest warrant affidavit.

Ortiz was arrested Saturday morning and charged with murder in connection with the death of Jesse James Perez, 29.

An autopsy shows Perez died of blunt force trauma to the back of his head and strangulation, the affidavit stated.

Police said they found Perez’s body Wednesday in a field in the 200 block of Tyson Street after neighbors complained of a foul odor in the area.

Guillermo Rangel came home to commotion -- police officers and crime scene tape all over the street next to his backyard.

He said another neighbor told him police found the body partially stuffed into a manhole.

“As soon as I heard that I said, ‘It’s got to be somebody from this area because only people from this area know where that manhole is,'” Rangel said.

The manhole is nearly undetectable in a grassy area that people often use as a dumping ground for old tires and other trash.

Two days after the body was discovered, a female friend of Ortiz came forward, saying that one night after drinking and watching a San Antonio Spurs game, Ortiz confessed to her about the crime, the affidavit stated.

The woman said Ortiz told her he and Perez had been arguing before he hit him in the head repeatedly with vise grips, the affidavit stated.

Police said the woman also led them to evidence at Ortiz’s home in the 4900 block of Luz Street, including a piece of furniture with blood on it, the affidavit stated.
