Police arrest suspect in Fort Sam Houston shooting
Female instructor shot on Fort Sam Houston, listed in stable condition
A shooting on Joint Base San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston sent a woman to the hospital and led to a manhunt for the suspected shooter on post.
Multiple shots were fired just before 3 p.m. at the Army Medical Department Center and School, the Army's medical training headquarters.
The victim, a female instructor at the school, was confronted by a man she knows, officials said.
"It started out as a conversation. He came into her office space, and then she took him outside of the building," said Col. Randy Anderson, Commander AMMED Center and School.
Shots were fired outside the building and the suspect fled. "Her co-workers are physician assistants and doctors and so they were immediately on the scene as first responders," said Col. Anderson.
The base was placed on lock down and the post's active shooter plan was enacted.
Military officers swarmed the area and San Antonio police provided support on the ground and in the air. Within an hour of the shooting, officials said the suspect was located and turned himself in without incident.
"He actually called the dispatch through his lawyer, SAPD dispatch, they relayed the call to us to locate him," said Matt Barido, Deputy Dir. Security Forces.
"We train for this, we're prepared for this and a result of that within one hour we were able to secure the incident and make sure everything went back to ops normal," said Air Force Brig. Gen. Robert LaBrutta, Base Commander JBSA.
The victim was transported to San Antonio Military Medical Center and was reported in stable condition Monday night.
The suspected shooter remained in military police custody on post. The names of the victim and suspect have not been released.
San Antonio Police Chief William McManus said earlier Monday the shooting was not random and there was some type of relationship between the two, however, it was unknown what the relationship was.
The suspect is facing federal charges because the shooting took place on a military base.
