An Eagle Pass man killed his wife and then tried to take his own life while their teenage daughter slept upstairs, police said.
According to Eagle Pass Police Chief Sam Granato, Romero Herrera, 63, fatally stabbed his wife, Blanca Herrera, 48, at their home in the 200 block of Medina Street. Their daughter discovered the bodies around 9:45 p.m. Wednesday.
"The 15-year-old daughter was upstairs asleep, heard the mother scream, came downstairs and turned the light on in the bedroom and discovered them in the bed," Granato said.
Romero Herrera was apparently upset over his wife filing for divorce.
Police believe Romero Herrera tried to fatally stab himself after killing his wife.
After making the discovery, the daughter ran to a relative's home down the street to call 911.
Granato said investigators have talked to a witness who says Romero Herrera previously threatened to kill his wife.
Romero Herrera was airlifted to University hospital in San Antonio and is expected to survive.
Granato said he will be charged with murder.
Eagle Pass Police are coordinating with other agencies to investigate the crime.
The couple is originally from Mexico and owns property in Piedras Negras, so investigators are working with police across the border to determine whether any domestic violence occurred there.
The Texas Rangers are also assisting in the crime scene investigation and interviewing the suspect in San Antonio.
