San Antonio police have identified Rita Pineda, 36, as the mother of three toddlers who were left home alone in their West Side apartment Thursday night.

Two of them were later found wandering outdoors.

Officers at the scene in the 100 block of Ocaso Walk said a neighbor called them shortly before 9 p.m. Thursday, saying that two toddlers --ages 1 and 2 — had been found all alone in a playground at the Villa Veramendi apartments.

Police later found a third toddler, a 3-year-old, who they said also was left unsupervised in an apartment nearby.

"It doesn’t surprise me. I've seen it happen all the time,” said Naomi McFall, who lives in the complex and also has a 3-year-old son. “I personally wouldn't do it. But I do see little kids, 2 and 3 years old, just running around. And I don't see parents."

Officers said they spent more than an hour trying to locate the parents of the toddlers at the apartment complex.

At some time later, Pineda showed up and was arrested on two counts of endangering a child, police said.

Police did not say immediately where she had been, or why Pineda allegedly left her children alone.

To McFall, no excuse is good enough.

“That's child neglect,” she said. "There are crazy people out there, so I'd never, ever think to just let my child walk off and play."
