SAN ANTONIO -

Yellow tape surrounded an east side convenience store Friday evening. Police say a man who tried to steal the cash register inside didn't get far after he collapsed right outside the front doors.

Sgt. T. Jones from the San Antonio Police Department said, "He did run out with the cash register and he fell, they tried to subdue him until the police arrived and he stopped breathing."

It happened just before 5 p.m. Friday evening at a Stop-N-Joy on Pecan Valley Drive near Rigsby.

Crime scene investigators spent several hours inside trying to piece together what exactly happened.

Sgt. Jones said the manager and two customers were subduing him when he collapsed. She said the store is equipped with surveillance cameras, which should help identify who the victim is.

"It's always been quiet. We haven't had problems at that location," said Sgt. Jones.

The name of the victim has not been released by medical examiner, nor how he died Friday evening.

The sergeant told KSAT 12 the victim was probably in his 40s or 50s.
