SAN ANTONIO -

An East Side man is in custody after he allegedly fired a high-powered weapon at two workers who had been watching him during an argument with his girlfriend.

San Antonio police were called to the 500 block of Canton Street after 10 a.m. Wednesday and found the suspect inside his home.

Police said witnesses told them he had fired at least one shot with what appeared to be an AK-47 rifle at two men who were working on a home nearby.

"He had been arguing with his girlfriend. They were throwing clothes outside,” said San Antonio police Lt. Michael Mosley. “He saw the workers standing out there looking at them and went back inside the house, grabbed a gun, came back out and fired one shot."

The workers were not hit by the gunfire.

Police said shortly after officers arrived, they were able to talk to the man on the phone and he surrendered peacefully.

Michelle Mitchell watched the drama unfold from her front porch.

“Then the officer walked over here and told us to go inside my house,” she said. “I was looking out my door when the dude came out with his hands up.”

Once police had the suspect in custody, they also brought three women and a girl out of the home.

Later, they also were spotted carrying several long guns out of the home.

The police presence came as a surprise to Mitchell, who described her neighbors as quiet and friendly.

"I never see them start trouble. I never see them in trouble, " Mitchell said. "They have their little family gatherings and everybody has fun and enjoys themselves."

Ossie Brown agrees, saying the family seemed peaceful.

"This is the first time the cops have ever had to come to this house," Brown said.

After the tense morning, neighbors said they hope it will be the last time for this sort of trouble.

Police did not release the name of the suspect at the scene.

They said he is the only person facing charges in connection with the incident.
