PLEASANTON, Texas -

The Pleasanton Police Department is asking for the community's help in tracking down the person responsible for the shooting death of a 23-year-old man.

Police received a call of shots fired at the 600 block of Sanchez Street in Pleasanton at 8:18 p.m. Monday.

However, Pleasanton police Chief Ronald Sanchez said before officers got there, they noticed a car speeding away from the scene.

"While they were en route, one of the officers discovered a vehicle driving from the scene," said Sanchez. "It had the back door open. He stopped to investigate."

The 23-year-old shooting victim, Rick Estrada, was in the back seat of that vehicle.

Sanchez said a couple of friends were trying to get Estrada to an area hospital, but that he had been shot several times and died before a medical helicopter could get there.

Some neighbors who live close by said this is not the first time shots have been fired in their neighborhood and they suspect it may all be drug-related, but they are hoping police will make an arrest soon.

"My investigators have been out since last night, along with the assistance of the Texas Rangers and the Atascosa County Sheriff's Department," said Sanchez. "They've been following up on leads all night, interviewing witnesses."

Sanchez is asking anyone who has any information on the shooting to contact the Pleasanton Police Department at 830-569-3869.
